Blast From The Past.

Speedway Results Over The Ether.

“For years it has been the subject for bitter complaint by many people that the BBC could not see its way to including speedway results in one of its news bulletins, in company with those great sports whose following was no greater or more enthusiastic. Now following repeated representations in the Speedway News the 10 o’clock bulletins is to include the results of the League matches.

This is little enough for the one hundred percent enthusiast, but it is better than nothing. We suggest that those who in the past have written their complaints to the BBC might do worse than give the same expression to their appreciation, at the same time including a tactful hint that a somewhat fuller account of speedway events should be given if and when those responsible for arranging the programmes can see their way clear to this”

Speedway News 5th October 1935

How come that in 1935 you could get the results on the 10 o’clock news but now over 60 later when you turn on teletext 2 hours after the match has finished the result isn’t shown - hardly progress.

Headmaster Attacks Speedway.

“A Halifax secondary school headmaster seems to be rather appalled by the effect of speedway racing on the modern generation. In his annual report at the school’s speech day and prize giving last week, he advised parents to guard against their children becoming fatigued by attending speedway meetings.

He continued “Do not allow your children to lose rest by going to the speedway. We had a thriving Wednesday evening dancing class killed by this annoying game – if you can call it a game – and we had a host of tired children who did no work on Thursday. It is certainly saddening and disgusting to find grown girls poring over pictures of speedway heroes. Surely the whole thing and what it brings on it’s train, calls for much more serious thinking and a change of outlook”
