Motor Stadium of Malilla

One of the two new Swedish venues brought in for 2005. On this first showing it proved to be an excellent race track with, on the basis of what was seen there in 2005, the backup to provide a good racing surface under the worst of conditions.

The track was completely relayed before the meeting could start due to the damage caused by steady rain for most of the day and a downpour just before the parade. I’m fairly certain that an ordinary league meeting would have been off.

Unfortunately getting to the town of Maililla may present somewhat of a challenge for the independent traveller and once there the track is at least a mile up an unmade road. The motor club itself caters for more than just speedway with various trails and what appears to be a stock-car track adjacent to the main speedway stadium.

Obviously for a GP event the stadium is seriously busy and viewing can be difficult for those of us who are vertically challenged. It seems that what terracing and grandstand seating there is available is soon snapped up by the locals and club members.

Facilities are definitely stretched on GP night.

Standing on a fairly steep wet grassy bank in such a big crowd with no protection from the elements takes us back to the days of Vojens and Linkoping. It does seem a bit of a backward step in some ways – it’s certainly a far cry from Parken or Cardiff  !!
